Cant detail He seems incompetent than even Erlendur who is often just too depressed to function all that well
so there is sympathy for Erlandur but "SIGURDUR IS JUST INCOMPETENT OR RATHER "is just incompetent or rather is there is sympathy for Erlandur but Sigurdur is just incompetent or rather Indridson is lazy about how he stretches out not much of a storyline So at one point Sigurdur has his guy right next to him who has been described as practically dead this after searching for him everywhere and Sigurdur gets a phone call and forgets to watch him and the guy runs away This is beyond pathetic written in 4th Grade language I give the book two stars since Indridson has written a few of these that were pretty good My favorite might be Voices with Erlendur holed up in a hotel Also Hyperthermia Strange Shores and the first two translated Silence of the Grave and Jar City are far better than Black Skies I ll mention some other lazy characteristics of the writing in general though not really existential or minimalistic but like missing and dumb most people are drunk or very dumb which makes uestioning difficult since invariably they are extemely hostile a few people are rich and corrupt and think themselves clever but they are also dumb no one is really in charge of the police department in Reykavik aside from the principals they are dumb and the inspectors all seem to float around willy nilly answering to no one They have a case certainly share a case but how this happens and who assigns them in the vague new headuarters is a deep mystery Almost all people in Iceland seem to live in the basement invariably wet and smelly The food sounds absolutely awful worse even than the weather Reykavik is impure the East is pure but not pure because of Alcoa Visit a glacier but not with a banker Always always always the ghosts of the past will come back to reveal themselves and bodies will be found as the ice cracks If ou want to leave say go to Florida Dés de la destinée you are no good Ifou have not read the previous books in Arnaldur Indridason s Reykjavik Murder series In Indridason s previous book Outrage the focus was on Elinborg and it was good to get to know about her BUT we were left wondering if Erlender
would return In this novel the focus is on Sigurdur Oli whose marriage is falling apart and his personal life is return In this novel the focus is on Sigurdur Oli whose marriage is falling apart and his personal life is a bit of turmoil We get a bit perspective on this man who is known for his detachment Elinborg is only mentioned a few times and Erlender is still on some uest and everyone seems uite worried about him The novel itself is excellent I expect nothing less from Indridason The Kindle price is back down to 999 good news after the sticker shock of 1799 Canadian pricesfor Outrage I do hope the next book resolves this business regarding Erlender Indridason has taken both Elinborg and Sigurdur Oli for a test run If the mantle is passed so be it but don t leave us hanging. N reasons for being present at the murder sceneMoving from the villas of Reykjavks banking elite to a sordid basement flat Black Skies is a superb story of greed pride and murder from one of Europes most successful crime write. ,
InterestI really enjoyed this bookthey just keep getting g better Yet another very readable crime mystery by the great storyteller Arnaldur IndridasonWhere other authors uickly return to their familiar and popular crime detectives to lead their stories often bringing them back from the dead Indridason leaves Erlunder literally in the wilderness the back and beyond of Iceland finding himself So we have the uality of his writing to carry the book In the previous one set at the set time Elinborg takes the lead while here it falls upon Sigurdur Oli carries the storyThe result is an enhancement of the series with greater depth and colour in this investigative team and it allows the reader to be presented with a slightly different book always rich in characterisation but the crime often brutal murder takes centre stage Sigurdur Oli has his own problems personal relationships missed career opportunities and a big city mentality He can be seen as a snob like his Mum or is he just dreaming of Florida and a better life The recent history of Iceland is explored indirectly in all these novels and here we are presented with the rush to borrow and the credit boom driven by banks and unsecured debt This new shallow lifestyle is illuminated with greed as a motive and growing debt and money problems the impetus to blackmail others Contrast that with a desire to escape one s past and ears of abuse All these stories are interwoven into the work of a solid determined persistent officer who perhaps lets friendship colour his judgement initially and ultimately arrives at the solution eventually hopefully without the loss of his professional integrityA case he perhaps should not have been working on leads to the revealing of a separate crime that has tenuous links with a third act of revenge All beautifully and seamlessly linked in a gentle read that never loses its way while covering a vast range of characters and incidents Happily it is the lead detective that holds any crime thriller together and in following Sigurdur Oli investigations we are treated to an absorbing read As someone mentioned Erlandur is missed as he takes perhaps a permanent sabatical into the snow Sigurdur Oli is no Jack Kennedy either And in this novel he doesn t so much as expand his cartoon personality as refute half of it with other tics The plot also is too similiar to many other of the novels We have a child
molester in fact the same one from earlier and another accident in the snow which one from earlier and another accident in the snow which out toin fact the same one from earlier and another accident in the snow which turns out to murder and Sigurdur s dull love life coninues at a snail s pace The routine is the same about four pages per chapter about 300 pages of mostly 4th grade dialogue as Sigurdur interviews one witness at a time per chapter and invariably reinterviews the same person again who adds another small signifi. Al visit to a couple of blackmailers He readily agrees only to arrive to find one of the pair lying in a pool of blood When the victim dies in hospital Sigurdur Oli is faced with investigating a murder without revealing his ow. At one point Arnaldur Indridason is at pains
to establish that his original main character has only been on leave for two weeks This is badestablish that his original main character has only been on leave for two weeks This is bad for readers of the series because in writingpublishing time they have been waiting for close on two ears for Erlendur to return Meanwhile we are left with Sigurdur Oli the less interesting of the two sidekicks To state the obvious there are very good reasons why sidekicks are not main characters The main story
is well plotted but it is unfortunate that the promoted sidekick is ratherwell plotted but it is unfortunate that the promoted sidekick is rather interesting and sympathetic than the alcoholic in the subplot With apologies to the author my main concern now is how long can it be before Erlendur returns If he s not coming back Reykjavik needs a new senior investigator In Black Skies Sigurdur Oli has shown that he isn t up to the job An entertaining read What seems like a straightforward blackmail case gone wrong soon turns out to have many other facets The darker underbelly of Reykjavik is well evoked and the impending financial crisis looms large over proceedingsErlendur and Elinborg are almost absent from this book it being Sigurdur Oli s turn for the limelight There s interesting back story to his relationships nicely interwoven with the plot Oil probably goes off piste a little than necessary but has a convincing manner of eliciting informationIndridason is definitely up there with the best of Nordic noir and for the most part plausible and less gruesome than Larsson or Nesbo On starting this novel and realising that et again Erlendur wasn t going to feature in it and that it focussed instead on Sigidur Oli a character whom I have never liked very much I was pretty disappointed I wasn t very far into the story however when I became aware that it was probably going to turn out to be a great read and indeed it did Getting to grips with the real Sigidur Oli and his cleverness and determination as a police officer was very interesting and the plot and it s outcome were very different very well thought through and kept me guessing The sub plot about Andres although a bit predicatble was nonetheless a good one Highly recommended This time Sigudur Oli is embroiled in a tangled tortured tale of extortionmurderpaedophiles and financial wrong doing I never formed much of an opinion of Siggi seeing him as a uiet unassuming "Educated Cold Fish This Story Exposes His "cold fish This story exposes his in gorgeous technicolorThe story is set at the same time as the previous novel featuring Elinborg Erlendur is away chasing ghosts so only receives a cursory mention Friends of Sigurdur Oli ask for his help with a small problem and he is drawn into a situation that could have impovations for his future career Family illness and unanswered uestions plus the case of the missing newspaper add another layer of.
